Scholarship FAQs
Answers to our most common questions.
What Programs do you currently offer?
We offer a free 6 Week CDL-A Program Through Our Accredited Partners to U.S. military veterans.
Honor Roads offers grants to be used for educational purposes to truck driver training and certification programs to help veterans acquire the skills needed for a career in the trucking industry. This grant includes helping the veteran obtain a commercial CDL-A driver’s license, and ultimately a career in the transportation industry.
What criteria do you use to determine the need for the program?
A veteran is eligible for our program grant and support if they are over the age of 21 (TXDOT license requirement) and have served on active duty in the US military for at least 30 continuous days. Most nonprofits determine veteran eligibility by length of active-duty service and discharge status. Herein lies the problem and the hole in the social safety net that Honor Roads proposes to fill.
At Honor Roads, we determined that Active Duty for Training (for Guard and Reservists) time also counts as military service. We also understand that a veteran needs a way to regain honor on the roads of life after receiving an other-than-honorable discharge status. We aim to be that bridge to a second chance.
Note: Besides the above criteria, TX DOT requires the following for a student to obtain a CDL Permit:
Section 1. Proof of Identity.
Section 2. Proof of U.S. Citizenship or Lawful Presence.
Section 3. Proof of Social Security Number.
Section 4. Proof of Self-Certification of Medical Status.
Potential CLA-A holders must be able to pass a drug and medical screening before issuing a Commercial Driver’s License.
Who can apply?
We have these types of customers: Active Duty discharging vets, Homeless vets, Previously incarcerated vets, National Guard and Reservists.
How do I apply?
Apply by completing our online application.
We will accept applications on a first come/first served basis, but award priority is given to homeless veterans and those veterans who were previously incarcerated as they will have more of a need for training than those veterans discharging from active duty or those veterans who are National Guard and Reservists. This will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
What documents do I need to apply?
Required documentation needed includes proof of military service.
Besides the above criteria, TX DOT requires the following for a student to obtain a CDL Permit:
If a student does not pass the initial drug screening, the scholarship offer will be rescinded, and the student won’t be able to reapply until they can pass the drug screen.
Note: Additional documentation may be required from the school to verify your acceptance into their classroom.
Can the funds be sent directly to me?
Funds cannot be sent to a private individual. We have a list of ‘approved schools’ who receive the CDL-A voucher grant as soon as space is available and scheduled with that school.
